Everything you need to know about REDLINE: Tactical Card Combat’s new upcoming anime series.
April 1st, 2022
Saving Throw Studios is excited to announce it has an anime series currently in development for it’s REDLINE card game with Twin Engine anime production and planning studios set for release in 2024.
Based on the brand new expandable card game, REDLINE takes place in the near future year of 2060 and focuses on the events and battles of the Solar War between the US backed forces of the United Nations of Earth (UNE) and the exiled Russian and Chinese alliance on Mars, aptly dubbed the Crimson Pact of Mars (CPM). The game has a heavy focus on mech combat, which the game calls efreets. REDLINE originally funded on Kickstarter back in 2020 and recently funded its first expansion, REDLINE Siege in 2021 on the same platform. During a game, players build and customize a squad of efreets then lead them into battle using maneuver to capture and secure terrain on an ever changing map of cards.
The game was designed by Cameron Dueker to merge his love of card and wargames together and features efreet designs by Stephen Huda, who has worked on other games such as the recently popular again, Battletech.
“From the start, we put a heavy emphasis on the REDLINE’s story.” Said head designer, Cameron Dueker. “We didn’t have to of course, and it took a lot of extra effort, but we thought it was important to make REDLINE feel as real as possible. Well, as real as a space war with giant robots can be of course. We asked ourselves what a conflict with these big giant machines would look like, and worked our way backwards from there. This is why the backstory has a lot of historical ties, specifically with the golden age of aviation you saw after WW1. I think we’re starting to see a lot of that play out again with the increasing commercialization of space. Its exciting”
Saving Throw Studios was first contacted by the Twin Engine production company shortly after the start of their second Kickstarter campaign for their first expansion set, REDLINE Siege.
As explained by Cameron, “They (Twin Engine) were looking to develop a new mech based anime and somebody at their studio stumbled across our Kickstarter. They really became engaged in the story and supplemental materials we had created for the Earth and Mars based forces and loved the look and potential of a brand new property, like ours, for a series. It was really just dumb luck they found us, but totally a dream come true”
Though early in development, the REDLINE Anime series looks to explore the events leading up to the outbreak of the Solar War through the younger eyes, and tested friendship, of two of the game’s main characters, UNE General Camilla Brand and CPM General Valya Serova.
“At the end of the day, Twin Engines really liked the characters.” Head designer of REDLINE, Cameron explained. “And we’re really excited to partner with an up and coming studio like Twin Engines to take the characters, like Brand and Serova, and the efreets from the game and build a story around them. We also liked that they were kinda this upstart anime studio but made a name for themselves by doing things their way. We had a lot in common and have been sitting on this project for a long time so are stoked to finally be able to share the news.”
Though details on the new anime series are scant, Twin Engines has said it will feature of mix of CGI efreet battles combined with traditional animation.
No casting information has been released yet. The REDLINE Anime series is currently scheduled for release in 2024. Meanwhile, Saving Throw Studios has its upcoming 2nd expansion for REDLINE: Tactical Card Combat due to Kickstart in summer 2022.
